Papa Smurfs Presidential Bid

Wire services hummed today with news of a major political announcement. It was rumored that Papa Smurf was huddled in close conference with his closest smurf advisors regarding the announcement of his long anticipates presidential bid. Having been absent from the Smurf scene for close to fifteen years, Papa Smurf's camp felt that is was opportune for Papa to throw his Smurf cap into the political arena.

As his media spokesperson, Smurfette stated "Papa Smurf is back! And it's about Smurfin' time!" While no details of his campaign platform were given, it was hinted that Papa Smurf would be proposing a balanced Smurf amendment. As of late today his advisors were still huddling with major public relations entities trying to finalize a campaign slogan.

The rumor mill ground on even further when news of a bidding war among the top late night shows began to circulate. News reports that Papa Smurf was slated to make an appearance on the Dave Letterman show (on or around Feb 10th) to announce his candidacy fueled the apparent frenzy. CBS officials would neither confirm nor deny the report. Yet sources close to Letterman were heard to say that Dave was ready to meet Papa Smurf head on with some tough questions. Meanwhile the Tonight Show issued a statement saying that if Papa Smurf wanted to establish his true Smurf credentials with the nation, the Tonight Show was the only forum in which to do it.

Conan O'Brien, apparently reacting to these developments, urged his people "to do all they Smurfingly could" to secure an appearance by Papa Smurf. Arsenio Hall would not be reached for comment, his whereabouts are unknown.
